#12 Julia Ann Taylor Goss (Bedingfield)

I still have more items to share on the Goss's but have felt to introduce a little bit more about our grandmother Julia Ann's family---whom we learned about in blog 11, along with a picture with her husband, our grandfather, John Lewis Goss and children. Julia Ann is Dorcas's (Doris) mom.

This is Julia Ann's mom---Cynthia Elizabeth Bedingfield (the name is mostly found with one d) Taylor. It is interesting to note that our grandmother Cynthia had only one child and that was Julia. Cynthia died shortly after giving birth---16 days later, she was only 18 years old:(. I think I have her nose!)

Cynthia's parents were James Matthew Bedingfield and Amanda Greenlee. They had 13 children. After Amanda died in 1867, her youngest was 3 our grandfather married a Mary Pierce---yes there were 4 more children from that marriage.

I am not sure who James parents are at this time. But, there is no doubt that this family is from the family roots listed below as James parents were born (got off a census, their birth place) the same areas that are listed in the info below. I won't put all the info that I have such list of children, etc. but if there is anyone wanting those list, I will be happy to share.

Note---the I in this information below is not me---I don't know who the author is but the call # on it is CC(L)F#713058, I assume that is a film.

BEDINGFIELD---BEDDINGFIELD

"The Bedingfield's are traced through Ogerus de Pugoy, a knight going with Duke William to conquer England in 1066. Ogerus was one of the 12 knights of the Honor of Eye. The knights were promised land in England, and Ogerus was given the Bedingfield estate. He took the name Bedingfield. the map---of 1086 in East Suffolk shows the spellings different from what we have today. The spelling then was Badingafelba. From the Bedingfield Post in England I have the acreage, live stock, etc.

The section in Normandy where William and Ogerus lived was settled by Vikings in 911, per Doomsday by Wood. I was told by one researcher that Ogerus's  father was Ulimar from Denmark, but have no proof. Jonathan Bedingfield said Pugoys were found in Norway.

Henry Bedingfield born 1613, died 1685 was created a Baronet by King Charles 11 in 1661. One of the Bedingfield's gave money for the king to wage war and was knighted, for the amount was too great to repay.

The coat of arms has the fleur-de-lis because the lily was the flower of Normandy. The arms and ermine an eagle displayed gules, crest a demi-eagle wings expanded gules. Motto: Despicio terrena solem contemplor, "I spurn earthly things and gaze on the sun."

Oxburgh in Norfolk was started by Sir Edmund Bedingfield in 1482, three years before the War of Roses came to an end. It was in the family for 900 years, except for a brief time in 1951. Lady Bedingfield was able to buy it, living there until her death, then it was given to the National Trust.

(skipped some stuff)

We were always told that three Bedingfield brothers came from England to Virginia, and that one went to Canada. Also, that our ancestor was a high tempered red headed Irish woman. (I don't know who this is and if this is our direct ancestor or not--patty). "

To be continued on next blog:)
