To me it is a miracle that I have this document. About 15 years ago, while on the internet, I found this letter. I called Ford's theater to inquire about it. I wondered about the rest of the letter and if there was anymore information about our family in the letter. The man from Ford's Theater was not happy that the document was out there for public view probably because it had been sold. He could not tell me anymore than that. I noted that it was immediately removed. At the bottom of the article, they said they had not been able to trace who Samuel J Koontz is but probably a member of a prominent Virginia family (which is not true). I have tried to find the owner of this letter but no success. But, over the years I have seen contents of this letter in different books and writings so have felt it is okay now to publish--I would love to have a copy of the whole letter! There is a William Weaver on the census records near where Samuel grew up at in York County, PA. I have a document that states that our Samuel was a well known professor in Washington D.C. He died June 1870, 5 years after this letter. He is buried next to his parents in the Franklin cemetery in Franklin,York County PA. That is all I know about him.

I remember when I was in Aztec, New Mexico, they had a large picture of our grandfather, John A. Koontz, hanging on the wall of their town museum. I am not sure if this is a copy of that one?
